A rose is a classic gift. But how to choose the perfect bud that will say more than a thousand words? An inexperienced giver often relies only on color, forgetting about the stage of opening, size, the quality of petals, and scent. Yet these parameters can turn a grand gesture into disappointment or, conversely, evoke delight. In this article, we will discuss how to choose the ideal rose bud for a gift so that it stays fresh and conveys the right emotions.
The size of the bud depends on the variety and stage of cutting. Large buds (5-7 cm in diameter and larger) look luxurious. They are suitable for special occasions: anniversaries, romantic dates, declarations of love. However, large roses are often grown with the help of hormones and may wilt faster. Small buds (2-3 cm), like those of polyanthas or spray roses, look modest but can be gathered into a bouquet of several pieces, creating volume. For a romantic date, it is better to choose a medium size (4-5 cm) — they seem natural and do not evoke associations with "plastic" flowers. Important: the bud should not be overripe (petals are about to fall off) or too green (it will not open).
The stage of opening is the key moment. A tightly closed, tightly rolled bud ("spiral") gives hope for a long life — it will open for several days. This is a good choice if you are giving a rose for several days. A half-open bud (petals have just begun to unfold) looks elegant and symbolizes an emerging feeling. A fully open bud (stamen is visible) reaches the peak of beauty but wilts quickly. It is given at moments of strong passion ("I am all yours"). Do not give an overripe bud (petals on the edges have dried out, color has faded) — this is a sign of disrespect. For a gift, it is best to choose half-open or tightly closed buds with colored tips of petals (a sign of freshness).
Different varieties of roses have a different number of petals: from 5 to 100 and more. Double roses (many petals) look lush and richly, they are given to create a sense of luxury. Simple (5 petals) are ascetic, suitable for minimalist bouquets. It is important that the petals are firm, without brown edges, without spots (a sign of disease or wilting). The natural sheen of the petals is a sign of freshness. Matte, dried petals are not. Do not hesitate to touch the bud (gently) before buying. The edges of the petals should not be limp. Also, pay attention to the outer petals — they may be slightly darker, this is normal (protection of the inner ones), but not rotten.
Not all roses smell. Many modern varieties ("sliced" for cutting) do not have a scent or smell very weak. This is done intentionally to make the flowers last longer (the scent releases ethylene, which accelerates aging). If you need a gift with a bright aroma, look for varieties: "Gloria Day" (fruit), "Double Delight" (citrus-spicy), "Papa Mian" (classic pink). Aroma can be tea, fruit, spicy, myrrh. A strong scent is suitable for romantic encounters, a weak one for formal occasions. But keep in mind: some people are allergic to strong smells. It is better to clarify with the recipient.
When choosing a cut rose, pay attention: sepals (green leaves at the base of the bud) should be pointing upwards. If they are hanging down, the rose is old. A fresh rose has a firm stem without wrinkles, a white or light green cut (not brown). The leaves should be green, without yellow spots. The petals should not fall off when lightly shaken. Store the rose in the cool, in the refrigerator (not in the freezer) in water until it is handed over.
A gifted rose is a message. Size, opening, petals, scent — all these details make the message personal. Do not trust the florist blindly. Spend a minute to examine the bud. And then your gift will be remembered for a long time.
