Vitalik Buterin — a Russian-Canadian programmer, co-founder and face of the blockchain platform Ethereum. One of the most influential people in the world of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technologies.
Full Name: Vitalik Dmitrievich Buterin
Date of Birth: January 31, 1994
Place of Birth: Kolomna, Moscow Oblast, Russia
Citizenship: Canada
Known as: Creator of Ethereum
Vitalik Buterin was born into a family of a computer scientist, Dmitry Buterin. At the age of 6, he moved to Canada with his family in search of better opportunities. His father found a job in an IT company in Toronto.
From a young age, Vitalik showed exceptional abilities in mathematics and programming. In third grade, he was enrolled in a class for gifted children, where his talents became even more evident.
In 2011, his father, Dmitry, introduced him to the concept of Bitcoin. Initially, Vitalik was skeptical about this, but the idea of decentralized money fascinated him.
He began to study the technology more deeply, write articles for Bitcoin blogs, and receive small fees in BTC. In 2011, he founded and became the co-editor of the online publication Bitcoin Magazine, where he published technical articles about Bitcoin and blockchain. At the same time, he enrolled in the University of Waterloo on the computer science faculty, but did not stay there long.
In 2013, after traveling the world and communicating with developers, Buterin concluded that Bitcoin has limitations. It lacked the functionality to create complex decentralized applications (dApps).
He outlined his idea in the White Paper (technical description) of Ethereum. Unlike Bitcoin, which was just digital money, Ethereum was envisioned as a "decentralized world computer". Its key innovation was the "smart contracts" — self-executing contracts with conditions written in code and decentralized applications (dApps).
The idea attracted attention and investments. In 2014, a famous crowdsale campaign was conducted, during which 31,591 BTC (about $18 million at the time) were raised. This allowed the foundation of the Ethereum Foundation and to fully focus on development.
July 30, 2015 the Ethereum network was officially launched.
Buterin is not just a creator; he remains the main ideologist and "public face" of the project. His key contributions:
Technical Vision: He actively participates in the development of protocols and proposes improvements (EIP — Ethereum Improvement Proposals).
The Merge: He was one of the main architects and supporters of the transition of Ethereum from energy-intensive Proof-of-Work (PoW) to eco-friendly and efficient Proof-of-Stake (PoS) in 2022. This historic event, which he called his greatest achievement.
Philanthropy: In 2021, he directed more than $1 billion in cryptocurrency Shiba Inu (which were donated to him) to funds for combating COVID-19 in India and other charitable initiatives.
Political Views: Buterin is a supporter of libertarian ideas, but in recent years his views have evolved towards a more pragmatic approach, recognizing the need for some state regulation for mass adoption of technologies.
In 2014, he became a recipient of the Thiel Fellowship ($100,000), founded by Peter Thiel, the co-founder of PayPal, for young entrepreneurs challenging traditional industries.
In 2021, he was included in the list of 100 Most Influential People of the Year by Time magazine.
He speaks fluently in four languages: Russian, English, French, and Mandarin (putonghua).
He is known for his ascetic lifestyle and complete focus on working on Ethereum.
Vitalik Buterin is a rare example of a person who, at a very young age, not only saw the potential of a new technology but also managed to realize a global idea, changing an entire industry. Ethereum has become the foundation for DeFi (decentralized finance), NFT (non-fungible tokens), and thousands of other projects, making Buterin one of the most important figures in the technological world of the 21st century.
