Urban noise is not just an annoying background. It is one of the most dangerous types of environmental pollution that is often undervalued. We see smog, feel the smell of exhaust fumes, but we get used to not noticing the noise. Meanwhile, the constant hum of cars, the roar of construction, screams and sirens are an ecological poison that destroys the health of billions of people. Unlike garbage that can be picked up or emissions that can be filtered, noise penetrates everywhere. It is difficult to fight it, but it is necessary.
Ecology studies the interaction of living organisms with the environment. Noise is part of the environment. For animals in the forest, noise is a signal of danger. For urban residents, chronic noise is chronic stress. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes noise as the second most harmful factor after air pollution. A constant level above 55 decibels (dB) is already dangerous. And in megacities, the average noise level reaches 70-80 dB during the day and 60-70 dB at night. This exceeds all imaginable norms.
The main source is transportation. Cars, buses, trucks, motorcycles. Especially noisy are tires on asphalt and engines at traffic lights. The second most significant source is the railway and metro (vibration and noise). The third is construction (percussion drills, jackhammers, trucks). The fourth is household appliances (air conditioners, ventilation, elevators). The fifth is social noise (screams, barking dogs, music, fireworks). At night, the problem becomes more acute because sleep is the main time for recovery.
Chronic exposure to noise leads to: cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, heart attacks - due to adrenaline release even during sleep); sleep disorders (even if you do not wake up, the brain reacts to noise, and deep sleep phases become shorter); decreased cognitive abilities (in children - reading delay, in adults - decreased concentration); mental disorders (irritability, anxiety, depression); hearing loss (irreversible). According to estimates, in Europe, 10,000 deaths from heart attacks each year are related to noise. Children living near noisy roads lag in their studies by 1-2 months a year.
Noise kills not only people. City birds sing louder, but their songs are less audible to partners, which reduces fertility. Frogs do not hear mating calls due to the noise of roads. Dogs suffer from phobias. Animals in forests near highways move deeper, losing foraging territories. Underwater noise from ships and pile driving kills whales and dolphins (they lose orientation, wash up on the shore). Urban noise is not just an inconvenience, but a factor in reducing biodiversity.
In Russia, the permissible noise level during the day is 55 dB, at night - 45 dB. But these norms are almost never observed. Fines for exceeding them are negligible, and measurements are rarely carried out. In Europe, it is stricter: in the Netherlands, noise barriers are installed on noisy roads, in Germany, trucks with pneumatic brakes are prohibited at night. In Japan, a large fine can be imposed for noisy air conditioning. In Russia, so far, only "quiet hours" (from 23 to 7 in the morning) are in effect in most regions, but there are many exceptions (metro, roads).
At an individual level: install noise-insulating glass packages (3-4 chambers), hang thick curtains, use white noise (fan, rain) for masking, sleep with earplugs (if there are no inflammations), seal gaps in windows. At a city level: greening (trees and shrubs reduce noise by 5-10 dB), noise barriers along roads, transferring cargo transport to night time, asphalt of a new generation (quieter). In 2026, cameras for detecting noise from motorcycles were installed in Moscow and St. Petersburg. But this is just a drop in the ocean.
Do not honk unnecessarily. Do not turn up the music to full volume after 11 PM. Support initiatives to install noise barriers. Vote for parties that include the fight against noise in their program. Do not buy apartments on the first lines of major roads - reduce demand. Report violations to Rospotrebnadzor and the police (with noise measurement). Record noise on a dictaphone and attach it to complaints.
Urban noise is not a given, not a fate. It is the result of thoughtless planning and indifference. We cannot get rid of all cars, but we can make life quieter. For our children, for our hearts. Silence is also a resource. And it is exhaustible.
