Spain vs Argentina: geography of global football sympathy

The national football teams of Spain and Argentina are two superpowers whose fan armies extend far beyond national borders. Both teams have millions of fans worldwide, but their popularity is distributed differently depending on the continent, cultural connections, and historical factors. The final of the 2026 World Cup between these two giants became not only a sporting event but also a unique sociological experiment showing whose opponent the world community sympathizes with.

Global popularity rankings: numbers and facts

According to the global digital ranking of national teams published by IBOPE Repucom in 2026, Argentina ranks fifth in the world in terms of the size of the digital fan base with 32 million followers on official social media pages. For comparison: France leads with 53 million, followed by Brazil (46 million), England (43 million), and Portugal (42 million). In South America, Argentina is only surpassed by Brazil in terms of digital presence - 29.9 million subscribers against 38.5 million for the Brazilians.

Spain, although not among the top five in terms of total number of subscribers, shows impressive growth dynamics. Six months before the 2026 World Cup, Spain entered the top five fastest-growing teams, adding 2.1 million new subscribers. The year before, Spain showed the third-largest growth in the world - around 3.3 million new subscribers, which accounted for a 20% increase in the base.

Inside Spain itself, football remains a national passion: according to the Nielsen Global Sports Report 2025, 51% of the population consider themselves football fans. At the same time, 32% of Spaniards support Real Madrid and 25% support Barcelona, indirectly reflecting the distribution of sympathies within the country.

In Argentina, football occupies an even more central place. According to 2025 data, 40 million Argentine fans make up 88% of the country's population. This is one of the highest indicators in the world, confirming that football in Argentina is not just a sport but the foundation of national identity.

Global poll by MARCA: the whole world is on the side of Spain

On the eve of the 2026 World Cup final, the Spanish publication MARCA conducted a large-scale poll involving over 20,000 respondents from all continents. Participants were asked to indicate their continent of origin and choose between Spain and Argentina. IP address verification was used to check the accuracy of the data.

The results were stunning: Spain received an overwhelming majority of votes on all continents:

  • Africa: Spain - 88%, Argentina - 12%
  • Asia: Spain - 82%, Argentina - 18%
  • Oceania: Spain - 86%, Argentina - 14%
  • North America: Spain - 72%, Argentina - 28%
  • South America: Spain - 59%, Argentina - 41%
  • Europe: Spain - 53%, Argentina - 47%

Even in South America, the homeland of Argentina, almost 60% of those polled preferred Spain. This is an amazing phenomenon: fans from a continent that traditionally supports its representatives in matches against Europeans chose the \"Red Fury\" this time. The reason is the widely spread belief that Argentina enjoys an unfair advantage in refereeing.

Europe: Spain at home, Argentina with nostalgia for Messi

In Europe, Spain received 53% of the votes against 47% for Argentina. This almost even result is explained by several factors. On the one hand, European fans traditionally support their continent's teams in matches against teams from other parts of the world. Many Russian coaches and football figures, such as Rashid Rakhimov, Rinat Dasaev, and Igor Divayev, openly declared their support for Spain in the final.

On the other hand, Argentina has a strong fan base in Europe thanks to the legendary status of Lionel Messi, who long played for Barcelona and remains a hero to millions of European fans. However, the MARCA poll shows that even European fans, despite their nostalgia for Messi, eventually chose the Spanish team more often.

Interestingly, according to a poll by the Russian newspaper \"Komsomolskaya Pravda,\" 64% of Russians said they supported Argentina in the final. This contrasts with the overall global trend and may be explained by the Russian audience's special sympathy for Messi and the Argentine style of play, as well as historical rivalry with Spain on the international stage.

Africa: the style of Spain against the legacy of Messi

Africa demonstrated the highest level of support for Spain - 88% against 12% for Argentina. This phenomenon deserves separate analysis. After all African teams left the tournament, millions of fans across the continent found themselves facing the choice of whom to support next.

Spain won the sympathy of Africans with its attacking, technical, and spectacular football, which many consider the most beautiful on the tournament. The young talent of Lamine Yamal, whose performances became one of the main sensations of the World Cup, excited particular delight. For African fans who value bright play, the Spanish style proved more attractive than the pragmatic approach of other teams.

Argentina, in turn, continues to enjoy enormous popularity in Africa thanks to Lionel Messi. For many African fans, Messi remains one of the greatest players of all time, and they hoped to see his final triumph. However, the charisma of one player, even legendary, gave way to the collective charm of the Spanish team, playing a more spectacular and team-based football.

It should be noted that African fans also actively supported France due to numerous connections with the African continent - many stars of the \"tricolors\" have African roots. However, in the final, where France did not play, the choice shifted in favor of Spain.

Asia and Oceania: nearly unanimous support for Spain

In Asia, Spain received 82% of the votes, in Oceania - 86%. These numbers show that Spanish football is perceived as a benchmark far beyond Europe. Asian fans, especially in China, Japan, and Southeast Asian countries, traditionally highly value the technical and combinational style that the Spaniards have demonstrated throughout the tournament. The MARCA poll showed that 82% of Asian fans consider Spain the favorite in the final.

America: a split continent

In North America, Spain led Argentina with a score of 72% to 28%. This is due to a large number of neutral fans in the United States and Canada who do not have a direct connection to Latin American football and choose the team that shows a more vibrant game.

In South America, as already noted, 59% of fans supported Spain against 41% for Argentina. This is a unique case in the history of football: a continent that usually unites around its representatives in the fight against Europe turned away from the Argentines this time. The main reason is a persistent perception that Argentina receives an unfair advantage from referees. Brazilian, Mexican, and Colombian fans openly expressed their dissatisfaction with this fact and chose Spain as a symbol of fair play.

Factors determining the choice of fans

Why did the world almost unanimously support Spain? Several key reasons can be identified.

First, the style of play. Spain demonstrated spectacular, attacking football with fast passes and technical skill, which attracted neutral viewers. Argentina, on the other hand, often relied on individual actions by Messi and a more pragmatic, defensive tactics.

Second, the perception of refereeing. Many fans worldwide believed that referees favored Argentina throughout the tournament. This caused irritation and a desire to support the opponent.

Third, the composition of the team. Spain had a young, bright team with rising stars such as Lamine Yamal, which aroused sympathy and a desire to see a new generation at the top. Argentina, on the other hand, was associated with the waning era of Messi, which caused nostalgia but not always a desire to support this team.

Fourth, the lack of direct African connections of Argentina. While France enjoyed support due to the African roots of its players, Argentina did not have such an advantage, and African fans chose based on the style of play, not ethnic ties.

Conclusion: the triumph of style over nostalgia

Numbers and polls paint an amazing picture: on the eve of the 2026 World Cup final, the world almost unanimously stood on the side of Spain. Even South America, the homeland of Argentina, was almost evenly divided, while in Africa, Asia, and Oceania, support for Spain exceeded 80%.

This phenomenon is explained not only by the sympathy for the play of Spain but also by a certain fatigue from the dominance of Messi and his team, as well as irritation about refereeing decisions in favor of the Argentines. Spanish football - technical, attacking, and team-based - proved more attractive to neutral fans than the pragmatic play built around one superstars player.

Thus, the geography of football sympathies in the final Spain - Argentina showed that in modern football, style and spectacle often mean more than star names and nostalgic feelings. And while Argentina had an army of loyal fans worldwide, Spain was able to win the hearts of millions of neutral fans, offering them a football that they want to play and watch.
