Oddly enough, we wait for our vacation for years, save money, plan routes, and when it finally arrives, we suddenly find that we can't relax. Our heads are occupied with work, our bodies are tense, and instead of joy, we feel anxiety or even irritation. The paradox of vacation is that it often becomes a source of stress, not a salvation from it. Why does this happen and how to avoid this trap so that vacation really becomes a time for recovery? Let's figure it out without unnecessary psychological fluff.
The most interesting part begins two to three weeks before departure. We try to close all work issues, submit reports, warn colleagues, and at the same time — buy tickets, book a hotel, pack suitcases, come up with entertainment. Many do this at the last moment because “there's no time” and “somehow it will work out”. As a result, the last days before vacation turn into hell: insomnia, mood swings, the feeling that you haven't thought of everything. And yet, it is this state of stress that we tried to leave at work.
The main reason is perfectionism and the fear of not coping. We are afraid that someone will notice our absence, that things will pile up, that we won't be able to handle the plans. It is important to realize: the world will not collapse without you. If you have done everything possible, the rest is not in your power. And here you need to accept a simple rule: plan your vacation in advance, but don't turn it into a second project. Buy tickets a month in advance, make an approximate route two weeks before, and leave some room for spontaneity. Then the pre-vacation hustle will become not panic, but pleasant anticipation.
It is also important to allocate time for the preparation of not only work but also your internal state. For example, a few days before vacation, you can start practicing breathing exercises or simply slow down. This will help you switch from the “running” mode to the “rest” mode even before you sit in an airplane.
The day of departure is a classic source of stress. Someone forgot their passport, someone didn't close the windows, someone didn't walk the dog. The car won't start, the taxi is late, and at the airport — a queue. Familiar? To avoid panic on the day of departure, make a list of tasks in advance. And not one, but two: one for things, and the other for “don't forget to turn off the iron”. Pack your suitcases not on the last evening, but two days in advance. Leave some “free” time for delays. And most importantly — remember: even if you forget something, almost always you can buy it on the spot, and worrying about it is just extra cortisol.
Psychologists recommend waking up early on the day of departure to avoid haste. And definitely have breakfast — a hungry brain makes the worst decisions in a stressful situation. Establish a small ritual: stand still for a minute before leaving, close your eyes, take three deep breaths. This will set you up for the fact that you are stepping out of your usual life and entering a space of rest.
Finally, you have arrived. The sea, palm trees, a cocktail in hand. But your head is still there — in work chats, in a list of tasks, in worry about what's happening in the office. And even on the beach, you can't disconnect. Why? Because the absence of external noise gives way to internal. We are used to distracting ourselves with work, and in vacation, we are left alone with our thoughts. If there is anxiety, unresolved issues, or just fatigue, they come out.
Moreover, many of us are not able to rest without a sense of guilt. We think: “everyone is working, and I'm lying down”, “I could have done more”, “vacation is not a merit, but weakness”. This is a mindset that needs to be changed. Rest is not a luxury, it is a necessity for productivity. Your brain, like a computer, requires a reboot. Without it, it will “stutter” and make mistakes.
How to help yourself relax? Set a limit on checking work email — for example, once a day for 15 minutes. Spend the rest of the time just on you and your rest. It is also useful to start the day without gadgets: dedicate the first 30 minutes after waking up to
