On February 6, 2009, the ISAA of Moscow State University hosted a conference within the framework of the Huber Readings on the topic "Historical Memory, ethno-cultural identity and political reality".

Opening the conference, the director of the Institute, M. S. Meyer, emphasized the great role of the outstanding orientalist Academician A. A. Huber in the study of the history of Southeast Asian countries.

Almost all participants of the conference are students of A. A. Huber or students of his students. His work and the methods he developed are fully used in studying the complex and highly controversial economic, social and political realities of the modern Asian world.

Within the framework of regular (every two years) Guber readings held by the Department of History of the Far Eastern and Southeast Asian countries, work continues on archival materials describing the life and work of Academician A. A. Guber. The publication of these materials, reflecting the unique image of a scientist and citizen, makes a significant contribution to the education of the younger generation of orientalists.

In his speech, V. V. Remarchuk (ISAA) analyzed in detail the new materials on A. A. Guber found in the archives of Moscow State University, the collections of the Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Department of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and other scientific institutions.

Yu. N. Gavrilov (Acad. public Services under the President of the Russian Federation) noted the great influence of A. A. Guber on the formation of scientific views and concepts of his students. The works of A. A. Guber, methods and forms of his research were the basis for the works of many specialists trained by him in the history of Southeast Asia.

The conference was held in two sections devoted to the problems of traditional society and modern development of the Southeast Asian countries.

The section "Historical Memory" opened with a presentation by D. V. Deopik (ISAA) about his work on the study of the early states of Austro-Asians, Thai and Tibeto-Burmese peoples in Proto-Southeast Asia in the 1st and 3rd millennium BC. Archaeological excavations of the last 25-30 years in China on the territory of the Long River (Yangtze It is possible to reconstruct the early history of the kingdoms of Yu, Yue, Chu, and Shu, which played an important role in the formation of the ancient states of Southeast Asia.

The report of M. Y. Ulyanov (ISAA) was devoted to the analysis of the chapter "Diliji" ("Geographical Treatise") A. O. Zakharov (Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences) focused in his speech on modern theories of the Indianization of Southeast Asia, including the concepts of J. Mabbet, H. Kulke, M. Smith, I. Glaver and others. B. Bellina, and highlighted the main historiographical trends in understanding the essential features of the history of Southeast Asia in the 1st millennium AD S. V. Kulland (Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences) on the example of studying the Wanua Tengah III inscription came to the conclusion that the analysis of Javanese and Malay epigraphy in comparison with narrative sources allows us to state that, contrary to"The "Hindu" states of the Malay Archipelago had a tradition of recording historical events and major time milestones.

N. A. Gozheva (GMV) considered the ritual functions of Buddhist sculpture, the rites of its consecration, as well as the aesthetic principles on the basis of which various Theravada schools developed their own original iconographic systems. One of the typical examples of such a system is the iconography of the Buddha in the art of Laos.

The report of P. Y. Tsvetov (ISAA) is devoted to the problem of dating the foundation of cities in Vietnam. The fact is that in Vietnam, the date of foundation of the city is considered the beginning of the establishment of official administrative control over it by the Vietnamese. This distinguishes Vietnamese historiography from the historical science of European countries, where scientists recognize the date of origin of a particular city as the first mention in written sources or the results of archaeological research.

K. Y. Leonov (ISAA) focused on the principles of selecting material for the Vietnamese chronicles during the reign of the first independent dynasties of Dinh and Le. His report contains an analysis of both ideological and textual approaches that were used in the compilation of the Vietnamese state chronicle "Daivet si ki toan thi" ("Complete Collection of History").-

A. L. Fedorin (IPV), based on his work on the translation of "Historical Notes of Daivet", expressed his critical attitude to the hypothesis prevailing in Russian Vietnamese studies in recent years, about the actual transition of power within the Late Li dynasty in the first half of the XII century. coverage of the Sino-Vietnamese armed conflict of 1059-1060 by Vietnamese and Chinese historical sources.

A large block of reports was heard as part of the general discussion. A number of reports were devoted to the problems of regional development in Southeast Asian countries. D. V. Mosyakov (Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences) considered the application of the civilizational method in studying the history of Southeast Asian countries. D. V. Mosyakov defined the very concept of "civilization" as a certain community connected by a set of certain basic meanings and united by a common political or religious idea. This approach makes it possible to identify some common features inherent in the peoples living in Southeast Asia, despite the uniqueness and originality of each of them. N. G. Rogozhina (IMEMO RAS) described in detail the environmental policies of the governments of these states and the role of the struggle that unfolded in them to establish control over the preservation of the environment and the use of resource - and energy-saving technologies. She drew particular attention to the role of the economic factor in the development of an environmental strategy in the Southeast Asian countries.

E. A. Kutovaya (ISAA) focused on the problems of regional community, which is manifested in the dialogical form of cooperation within the framework of ASEAN activities, and increasing its role in expanding ties between the countries of the region with a number of major countries of the world and various international organizations (ARF, EAC, APEC and APPF).

A number of reports were devoted to the influence of the traditional factor on the modern political development of Southeast Asian countries.

A. Drugov (Institute of Political Science of the Russian Academy of Sciences) spoke on the topic of modern political culture and political forms in Indonesia. Difficulties and contradictions in the political life of Indonesia, in his opinion, are explained by the preservation of traditional ideas of Indonesians about power, the deformed political psychology of the local elite, which was formed in the conditions of long-term existence of authoritarian regimes, as well as corrupt forms of power organization, and growing discontent in society with the slow progress of reforms.

N. N. Bektimirova (ISAA), paying attention to the political life of modern Cambodia, the legitimacy of the established government, noted the growing influence of traditional political culture on society. This is largely due to the goals and objectives of the leadership of the People's Party in power and its leader Hun Sen. In the revival of traditional culture, the ruling elite finds an opportunity to further strengthen the legitimacy of the political order it has established.

E. A. Yakovleva (MGIMO University) Russian Foreign Ministry), having considered the main stages of the formation of the Lao statehood, the struggle for the unification of the Lao lands and the creation of a single independent Laos in 1954-1975, noted the historical continuity in the policy of the modern leadership.

V. A. Dolnikova and I. M. Lipilina (both ISAA) discussed the causes, features and main stages of the political crisis in Thailand in 2006-2009. Its emergence, in their opinion, is connected with the manifestation of an acute confrontation between two main trends in the country's political life: the gradual strengthening of democratic trends, parliamentary institutions and the preservation of traditional, most conservative principles of power organization in the context of an intensive process of modernization of the economy and society and active intervention of commercial structures in the country's political development. He considered the current political situation in the Federation of Malaysia, the current bureaucratic-bourgeois social system, and ongoing interethnic conflicts. V. A. Tsyganov highlighted the prospects of a possible merger of the main "racial communities" into a single Malay nation, which will contribute to strengthening political stability and successful economic development of the country.

V. V. Sumsky (IMEMO) described the personality and political activity of A. Malik, who held important state posts in Indonesia in 1966-1978, and in 1978-1983 was the Vice-president of the republic. In 1959-1969, A. Malik was the Ambassador of Indonesia to the USSR and advocated the development of relations between the two countries.

reactions of the Indonesian public to the book published in 2007 by the American journalist T. Weiner about the history of the CIA and cooperation with it in the 1960s by A. Malik. The report of M. A. Syunnerberg (ISAA) considered the causes, nature and results of socio-economic reforms in the framework of Ngo Dinh Diem's "state building" program in 1955-1963.

T. N. Filimonova (ISAA) analyzed the content of the document that reflected the essence of the so-called renewal movement that swept Vietnam in the early 20th century. and it was an attempt by the Vietnamese to determine their place in world civilization. A. A. Sokolov (Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences) spoke about the development of Soviet-Vietnamese relations in 1945-1954, in particular about the negotiations that were conducted during the stay of the Soviet military mission in Vietnam from October 1946 to the beginning of 1947. O. V. Novakova (ISAA) devoted her speech to the development of the ideology and culture of modern Vietnam. She drew attention to the high degree of receptivity of the Vietnamese ethnic group to new Western European behavioral models and realities, while preserving the national identity and traditional cultural values. V. M. Mazyrin (ISAA) gave a theoretical justification for the evolutionary model of social transformation of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the policy of renewal, transition to a market economy and the formation of a mixed socio-economic system with its inherent difficulties and contradictions.

In her closing speech, N. N. Bektemirova, Head of the Department of History of the Far Eastern and Southeast Asian Countries, noted the novelty and relevance of the reports heard at the conference. The next conference within the framework of the Huber Readings will be held in February 2011.
