The Moon is an ideal base for observing space. And perhaps it will become a launch pad for flights to Mars.

The NASA Artemis program is not just \"another landing.\" It is the creation of long-term infrastructure on the Moon: a base at the southern pole, lunar modules, an orbiting station Gateway. China, together with Russia, is building the International Lunar Scientific Station. Private companies, such as SpaceX and Blue Origin, are preparing their missions. The Moon is becoming the point of intersection of state and private interests. This is no longer a race for prestige, but an economic and strategic necessity.

Moreover, the Moon is a scientific laboratory. There, in low gravity, experiments can be conducted that cannot be replicated on Earth: study the behavior of materials, biological systems, physical processes. This may lead to discoveries in materials science, medicine, energy. The Moon is not the end of the road, but the beginning.

Perspectives of a New Landing: What Has Changed in 50 Years

The new landing will be different. In 1969, we had three days on the Moon, and all we could do was collect rocks and plant a flag. Today we have robots, 3D printing, artificial intelligence, and ion thrusters. We can build bases from lunar regolith, extract water, use solar energy. We can stay on the Moon for months, and then send expeditions further.

The Artemis program provides for a landing on the southern pole. This will not just be \"visit,\" but \"stay.\" First for a few days, then for weeks, then for months. By the 2030s, it is planned to create an inhabited base where it will be possible to live and work. This sounds like science fiction, but it's a real plan. Technologies allow it. Dust, which settles on equipment, is abrasive and toxic. Psychological stresses of isolation. All this will have to be solved. Moreover, the Moon is a platform for inspiration. A new generation grew up with stories about Apollo, but never saw a landing. The new era of lunar expeditions can give them their own \"story,\" their own myth. This is important for culture, education, spirit. Because without dreams we stop moving forward.

What Next: Lunar Bases, Tourism, and Industry

If the plans are realized, we will see the first \"cities\" on the Moon this decade — modular bases where scientists, engineers, and even possibly the first space tourists will live and work. SpaceX and other companies are already selling tickets to low Earth orbit, and in a few years they will offer tours to the Moon. This will be expensive, but it will happen. The Moon will no longer be a place for selected heroes — it will become a place for everyone who has the desire and means.

Lunar industry is also not far off. The mining of helium-3, which can be used for thermonuclear fusion, may become an energy breakthrough. The mining of rare metals is an economic stimulus. The construction of telescopes on the far side of the Moon is a scientific breakthrough. This is not futurology, this is the nearest prospects. The question is not \"if,\" but \"when.\"

Of course, there are risks. Militarization of space, pollution of the lunar environment, unfair distribution of resources. But these risks are not a reason to give up the dream, but a reason to make it right. International agreements, such as the Outer Space Treaty, already regulate the use of the Moon.
