Airplanes - Kings of Safety

Every airplane crash becomes global news. We see the debris, hear the number of victims, and fear seeps into the soul: "Flying is dangerous." Paradox: car accidents take hundreds of times more lives, but they don't make the news. Cars are lumped into statistics, airplanes into legends. But if you look at the numbers, the airplane is the safest mode of transport on the planet. Let's figure out why.

Statistics: the myth of aviation mortality

In 2025, about 350 people died in airplane crashes worldwide (including general aviation). At the same time, in road accidents, more than 1.2 million. The probability of dying in one flight is 1 in 11 million. The probability of dying in a car ride is 1 in 5,000. To get into an airplane crash, you need to fly every day for 10,000 years. The risk of even dying from lightning is higher (1 in 700,000). Statistics are unyielding: airplanes are the kings of safety.

Why are airplanes so safe

There are many reasons. System redundancy: an airplane has 2-4 engines, 3 hydraulic systems, several generators, and reserve instruments. If one engine fails, the airplane can fly on the other. Pilot training: they train on simulators for years, undergo a medical examination every 6 months, and alcohol checks. Technical maintenance: every airplane is checked before every flight, and every 2-3 years it undergoes a deep inspection (C-check, D-check). Modern materials: composites stronger than steel, avionics warning of stalls, TCAS (airborne collision avoidance system). International standards: ICAO dictates rules that are the same for all countries.

The safest airplanes in history

Boeing 777 - no accidents in 30 years of operation (except for those shot down by missiles and hit by volcanic ash, but not for technical reasons). Airbus A380 - no victims. Bombardier CRJ - good statistics. Airplanes recognized as unreliable (Boeing 737 MAX after two crashes) have been modified and are flying again. Nevertheless, aviation learns from its mistakes: changes are made to the design and rules after every crash.

Comparison with other modes of transport

Railway: the risk of dying in a train is 5 times higher than in an airplane, but still low. Bus: 15 times higher. Car: 300 times higher. Motorcycle: 3,000 times higher. A taxi ride is not safer than a personal car. So if you're not afraid to drive a car but afraid to fly, you're irrational.

Psychology of fear of flying

Fear of flying (aerophobia) is associated with a lack of control, confined space, news about crashes. We overestimate rare but dramatic events. To overcome fear, you need to know the statistics, trust the pilots, learn breathing exercises. By the way, the most dangerous part of the flight is the car ride to the airport.

How to increase your safety in flight

Choose large airlines (they have better technical maintenance). Buy tickets for airplanes not older than 15 years. Sit in seats by the exit (there is more space there). Fasten your seatbelt on takeoff and landing (the most dangerous stages). Don't drink alcohol before the flight (it worsens reaction during evacuation). Study the safety card.

Airplanes are the kings of safety. It's as silly to be afraid of them as it is to be afraid of elevators (which are also very safe). Next time you book a ticket, remember: millions of people fly every day and land alive. And the driver's seat - that's where the real risk is.
