June 5 — World Environment Day. It is the main environmental holiday on the planet, established by the UN in 1972. But there are others: Earth Day (April 22), Car-Free Day (September 22), Eco-Day in Russia (June 5). Regardless of the date, the essence is the same: to remind people that nature is not eternal. That waste does not disappear, and water is not infinite. Eco-Day is not a day to breathe a sigh of relief and forget until next year. It is a day to start changing.
Every year, more than 2 billion tons of waste are produced in the world. Forests the size of Panama are being cut down. Animal species are disappearing. People are suffocating from smog. Eco-Day is not just for show. It is a global flashmob: turn off the lights for an hour, collect plastic, plant a tree. But the main thing is to think. Why do I buy water in plastic? Why do I need a bag for 15 minutes? Can I ride a bike? This holiday is a catalyst for personal responsibility.
In Australia: clean beaches of plastic, dive with scuba gear, collect waste on coral reefs. In India: plant millions of seedlings in a day (record — 50 million in 12 hours). In Germany: eco-fairs with repair of things, exchange of clothes. In Kenya: ban plastic bags on this day (already banned, but on the holiday — raids). In Brazil: carnival parades in costumes made of waste. In Russia: clean-up days, separate collection, lectures in parks, green flashmobs.
It is not necessary to go to a rally. You can: return batteries and bottle caps to a special point; refuse to use a plastic coffee cup (come with your own mug); participate in separate waste collection; clean up the forest (with gloves); install a water-saving nozzle on the tap; buy a reusable water bottle; do not buy anything on this day (a day without purchases). The main thing is not to pretend that you are saving the world in one day. Better to start small but consistently.
Climate change is known to everyone. But there are hidden threats: light pollution (stars are not visible at night, birds collide with the path); noise pollution (whales lose their hearing from ship propellers); pharmaceutical waste (antibiotics in rivers create superbugs); electromagnetic pollution (not well studied yet). Eco-Day should also attract attention to such topics.
One person cannot recycle a million tons of plastic. Infrastructure is needed: containers for separate collection, recycling plants, ban on single-use plastic, eco-labeling. This is already working in Europe. In Russia, the first steps are being taken. On Eco-Day, companies report on their green projects. But often this is "greenwashing" (pseudo-environmentalism). Critically evaluate advertising slogans.
Ecology is not just about waste. It is about taking care of yourself: not to clog your body with fast food, not to pollute your mind with endless scrolling. Eco-Day can become a day of digital detox: turn off the phone, go into the forest, feel the silence. The ecology of the soul is about forgiving grudges, letting go of worries. The inner world also needs cleaning.
Eco-Day will not solve the problem if you follow the rules only on June 5. But it can become a point of no return. That day when you decided: from today on, I carry a mug with me, sort the waste, do not burn leaves, do not throw a cigarette butt into the grass. Because miracles do not happen. Miracle is each of us.
